Single Origin Coffee From Papau New Guinea: Exceptionally Rich

Papua New Guinea: Wild, Remote, and Exceptionally Rich Single Origin Coffee

In the world of Single Origin Coffee, Papua New Guinea stands apart—both literally and figuratively. Remote, rugged, and rich in natural beauty, this island nation produces coffees that are as untamed and captivating as the landscape itself.

At The Mocha Collective, we’re drawn to origins that offer a story—and Papua New Guinea delivers one of the most unique coffee journeys in the world.

How Coffee Came to Papua New Guinea

Coffee cultivation in Papua New Guinea (PNG) began in the late 1920s, when seeds from Jamaica’s Blue Mountain variety were introduced to the Eastern Highlands. The plants thrived in PNG’s volcanic soil, high altitude, and tropical climate.

What makes PNG’s coffee history distinct is the way it evolved. Unlike many origins that started with large estates, coffee in PNG has always been deeply community-based. Today, over 80% of the country’s coffee is grown by smallholder farmers—many of whom live in isolated highland villages with limited access to infrastructure. Despite these challenges, they consistently produce exceptional coffee.

The Highlands of Chimbu: A Coffee Growing Region Like No Other

Our Papua New Guinea coffee comes from the Chimbu Province, located in the central highlands at elevations between 1,350 and 1,800 meters. The terrain is mountainous and remote, with rich volcanic loam soil, high humidity, and cool nights—ideal conditions for growing dense, flavorful Arabica beans.

The coffees here are typically handpicked, fully washed, and sun-dried on raised beds, preserving clarity while showcasing the natural sweetness and fruitiness in the cup. It’s a labor of love, done almost entirely without machines.

What Makes PNG Coffee So Special?

Papua New Guinea’s Single Origin Coffee is known for its balance—melding sweetness, fruit, and richness in a way few origins can. Thanks to its Blue Mountain heritage and unique terroir, PNG coffee has a mellow acidity, syrupy body, and a complex blend of chocolate, honey, and tropical fruit notes.

It’s smooth and comforting, yet quietly adventurous—a perfect reflection of the land it comes from.

Generalized Tasting Notes:

  • Caramel and honey sweetness

  • Soft fruit tones (stone fruit, red apple)

  • Medium body with silky texture

  • Subtle chocolate and floral undertones

Papua New Guinea’s Role in the Global Coffee Market

PNG exports around 800,000–1 million bags of coffee per year, with over 90% coming from small-scale farmers. The country has become a niche favorite in the specialty market, offering a flavor profile that’s both familiar and unique.

Despite infrastructure challenges, the quality coming out of Papua New Guinea continues to rise, thanks to farmer-led cooperatives and partnerships with ethical importers. At The Mocha Collective, we proudly source our PNG beans from small agricultural groups in Chimbu, supporting fair practices and sustainable trade.
