How To Pour The Perfect Chemex
Chemex pour-over coffee is a classic and elegant way to make cofee at home. Known for producing a clean cup with a bright flavor profile. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to pour the perfect Chemex:
Step 1: Gather Your Equipment
Here's what you will need for the perfect Chemex pour-over: a Chemex coffee maker, Chemex paper filter, freshly roasted coffee beans, a grinder, a gooseneck kettle, a scale, and dont forget the hot water.
Step 2: Heat Water
Boil water in your kettle and then let it cool to a temperature between 195-205°F (90-96°C). This is the optimal temperature for brewing coffee.
Step 3: Measure & Grind Your Coffee
Measure your beans and grind them to a medium-coarse consistency. You'll need about 1 ounce (28 grams) of coffee per 16 ounces (475 milliliters) of water.
Step 4: Pre-wet The Filter
Place the Chemex paper filter in the Chemex coffee maker with the triple-folded side facing the spout. Rinse the filter with hot water to remove any paper taste and preheat the Chemex. Discard the rinse water.
Step 5: Add Coffee Grounds
Add the ground coffee to the pre-wetted Chemex filter. Give it a gentle shake to level the bed of coffee grounds before adding water.
Step 6: Bloom the Coffee
Pour hot water evenly over the coffee grounds, starting from the center and spiraling outward, until the coffee grounds are fully saturated. Allow the coffee to bloom for about 40 seconds. This helps release the flavors and aromas of the coffee.
Step 7: Start the Pour
After the bloom, slowly pour the remaining hot water over the coffee in a circular motion, making sure to cover all the grounds. Keep the water level below the top of the Chemex, avoiding overflow.
Step 8: Control the Pour
Maintain a slow and steady pour, avoiding agitation of the coffee grounds. Aim for a total brew time of 3-4 minutes.
Step 9: Enjoy the Coffee
Once the brewing process is complete, remove the Chemex from the scale and discard the used coffee grounds and filter. Pour the brewed coffee into your favorite mug and enjoy the smooth, flavorful cup of Chemex coffee.
Try different beans, grinds, water-to-coffee ratios, and pouring techniques to find the flavor profile that best suits you.
Happy brewing!
