The Tradition of Saudi Coffee

In Saudi Arabia, coffee holds a special place in the hearts of its people. It's a symbol of hospitality, a way to welcome guests, and a cherished tradition for centuries. Traditional "Saudi" or "Arabic" coffee is made using green coffee beans, cardamom pods, and a touch of saffron, giving it a distinctive and inviting flavor.

Ingredients You'll Need:

  • 2 Cups of Distilled or Filtered Water
  • 1 - 3 Ground Tablespoons of your Favorite Lightly Roasted Coffee
  • 4-5 crushed cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • A pinch of saffron threads
  • 1 - 2 Tablespoons Of Rosewater

Instructions:

  1. Grind your beans to a medium-coarse consistency
  2. Crush the cardamom pods to release their aromatic seeds by using a mortar and pestle or the flat side of a knife.
  3. Add a pinch of saffron threads to a small bowl and crush them with the back of a spoon to release their color and flavor.
  4. In a coffee pot known as a "Dallah," combine the roasted and ground coffee beans, crushed cardamom seeds, and saffron.
  5. Pour in the cold, filtered water and give it a gentle stir to mix the ingredients
  6. Place the Dallah on the stove over low heat and bring it to a gentle simmer. It's important not to boil the coffee, as this can make it bitter.
  7. Allow the coffee to simmer for about 10-15 minutes, during which time it will release its rich flavors and aromas.

Traditionally, Saudi coffee is served in small, handle-less cups called "Finjan."

  • Pour the brewed coffee into the Finjan cups and serve them to your guests.

  • Feel free to sweeten the coffee by adding sugar to taste, although it's often served without sugar to allow the natural flavors to shine.
