Single Origin Coffee From Guatemala: Bold Beauty

Single Origin Coffee From Guatemala: Bold Beauty

Guatemala’s Volcanic Richness: The Bold Beauty of Single Origin Coffee

Few coffee origins are as iconic—or as flavorful—as Guatemala. With its dramatic landscapes, centuries-old coffee farms, and bold, chocolatey profiles, Guatemalan Single Origin Coffee is a favorite among specialty coffee lovers for good reason.

At The Mocha Collective, we celebrate the regions that define the coffee world—and Guatemala’s highlands are a true classic. This is coffee that speaks in deep tones of chocolate and fruit, grounded in generations of craft and soil shaped by fire.

How Coffee Came to Guatemala

Coffee was first introduced to Guatemala in the 1700s by Jesuit missionaries, but commercial production didn’t flourish until the mid-1800s, when declining global demand for indigo pushed the country to develop coffee as its primary export.

By the late 19th century, coffee had become Guatemala’s economic backbone. Wealthy landowners and, later, cooperatives began to develop farms across the country’s volcanic highlands, especially in regions like Antigua, Huehuetenango, and Cobán.

Today, Guatemala is known for producing some of the most consistently high-quality Arabica beans in the world.

Antigua Guatemala: A Storied Coffee Region

Our Guatemalan beans come from Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage site surrounded by three volcanoes: Agua, Fuego, and Acatenango. The coffee grown here benefits from volcanic loam soil, high elevation (1,200–1,600 meters), and a climate that provides warm days, cool nights, and rich, mineral-heavy terrain.

Farmers in Antigua often grow heirloom varietals like Bourbon, Catuai, Caturra, and Typica, and use fully washed, sun-dried processing methods that bring out incredible flavor clarity and depth.

What Makes Guatemalan Coffee Special?

Guatemalan Single Origin Coffee is known for its full body, sweet cocoa base, and balanced acidity. It’s a classic specialty profile—comforting yet complex, smooth yet layered—with flavor notes that range from dark chocolate to citrus to butterscotch, depending on the region and roast.

Generalized Tasting Notes:

  • Dark chocolate and cocoa

  • Bright fruit (think red apple or citrus)

  • Butterscotch or caramel sweetness

  • Medium to full body with a smooth finish

This is coffee that pairs beautifully with milk or stands confidently on its own.

Guatemala in the Global Coffee Market

Guatemala exports more than 3 million bags of coffee annually, making it one of the top coffee producers in Central America. Much of this production comes from smallholder farms, many of which belong to cooperatives that focus on sustainability, traceability, and quality.

Regions like Antigua, Huehuetenango, and Atitlán regularly place in international cupping competitions, solidifying Guatemala’s status as a premium origin.

At The Mocha Collective, we source directly from farmers and cooperatives in Antigua who take pride in cultivating coffees with rich body and regional character.
