Single Origin Coffee From Uganda: A Hidden Gem
Uganda’s Hidden Gem: Discover the Depth of Its Single Origin Coffee
Uganda may not be the first country that comes to mind when you think of premium coffee—but it should be. Tucked among Africa’s coffee powerhouses, Uganda is a rising star in the world of Single Origin Coffee, delivering floral, fruit-forward profiles with surprising nuance and clarity.
At The Mocha Collective, we believe in spotlighting origins that deserve more attention—and Uganda’s coffee story is one worth tasting.
How Coffee Took Root in Uganda
Coffee is deeply woven into Uganda’s cultural and agricultural history. Indigenous Robusta coffee trees grow wild in Uganda’s forests—one of the few countries where coffee is truly native. However, Arabica coffee didn’t appear in Uganda until the early 1900s, introduced by missionaries and colonial agronomists in the country’s eastern highlands.
Arabica found a perfect home in the elevated areas around Mount Elgon, particularly in the Sipi Falls region of the Kapchorwa District. The cooler temperatures, volcanic soil, and steady rainfall turned these slopes into an ideal environment for cultivating high-quality, washed Arabica coffee.
The Highlands of Sipi: A Coffee Terroir Like No Other
Uganda’s most sought-after Arabica beans are grown between 1,500 and 2,500 meters above sea level, with rich volcanic soil and high humidity helping to develop complex sugars in the cherries. The region around Mount Elgon, especially the Sipi and Bugisu zones, is now recognized for producing specialty-grade coffees that rival those of its East African neighbors.
Most coffee is grown by smallholder farmers working on less than two hectares of land. These producers often rely on handpicking, careful fermentation, and sun-drying on raised beds—a labor-intensive but rewarding process that leads to clean, expressive cups.
What Makes Ugandan Coffee Unique?
Uganda’s Arabica coffees—particularly from Sipi—are known for their delicate floral notes, gentle acidity, and soft body. The varietals grown here include SL14, SL28, and Blue Mountain, all of which thrive in the high altitudes and volcanic soil.
Uganda’s Single Origin Coffee stands out with its subtle, balanced flavor—making it an ideal choice for both everyday drinkers and those seeking something a little more refined.

Uganda’s Growing Role in the Global Coffee Market
Uganda is Africa’s second-largest coffee producer—after Ethiopia—but the majority of its output has historically been Robusta. That’s changing quickly. Over the last decade, Uganda has expanded its specialty Arabica production and is gaining recognition for high-quality lots from microregions like Sipi Falls and the Rwenzori Mountains.
International demand for Ugandan Arabica is rising, and forward-thinking cooperatives and exporters are helping farmers access specialty markets. At The Mocha Collective, we’re proud to be part of this momentum by sourcing directly from smallholder growers in the Sipi region.
